Python for teens: where to start without knowing how to code

What Python is, what prior knowledge it requires, and how to progress from logic and blocks to your first program written in text.

2 min read For ages 12 to 17

Why Python

Python is one of the most widely used languages in the world. Its syntax is quite close to natural language, which is why it is a common choice for teens making the move from blocks to written code.

What to know beforehand

Python demands more than dragging blocks. Before starting, it helps to be comfortable with:

  • Variables: storing a piece of data to use later.
  • Conditions: making decisions with «if… then…».
  • Loops: doing something several times with a loop.
  • Reading errors: understanding what the program says when something fails.

If they've already used Scratch or block programming, these concepts will feel familiar. If not, a good first step is a logic lab.

Your first program

The first program is usually small. Here is a simple example:

nombre = input("¿Cómo te llamas? ")
print("¡Hola,", nombre, "bienvenido a Python!")

Running it, changing the text and seeing what happens is the best way to understand how it works.

A path in four stages

  1. Logic: solve challenges without writing code.
  2. Blocks: practice the concepts with visual programming.
  3. Simple text: write short programs in Python.
  4. Projects: create something of your own, like a game or a tool to solve a real problem.

Frequently asked questions

At what age should you start with Python?

From age 12 is a common stage, as long as they already have the basics of logic.

Do I need a powerful computer?

No. Python runs on ordinary computers and can also be practiced in an online editor.

Is Python useful for work in the future?

It is used in data analysis, automation, web development and artificial intelligence, among other fields.
